Mamelodi Sundowns win the title for the fourth consecutive time

Mamelodi Sundowns set a record as the first team in the PSL to win the league title four times in a row. After former head coach Pitso Mosimane departed, there were a lot of doubts about whether co-coaches Manqoba Mnqithi and Rhulani Mokwena would be able to keep the team’s consistency and stability. They did well enough to defend the league as they won 19, drew 10 and lost only one of 30 league games they played. Two of Masandawana’s players Themba Zwane and Peter Shalulile are among the nominees for Footballer of the season with the stellar performances they produced.

Black Leorpards’ relegation

The Lidoda Duvha were the weakest side in this campaign, struggling to get results and had some difficulties with coaches. They fired three coaches this season starting with Patrick Aussems, who was appointed in the off-season, axed upon losing his first three matches. Then they appointed Dylan Kerr who resigned in January over a falling out with assistant coach Lehlohonolo Seema who was after then appointed as an interim coach but fired in May after poor results. The Limpopo based side only won 5, drew 8, and lost 17 of 30 league games. They were relegated with one game left before the end of the season.

Chippa United to play PSL Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs

Chippa United fell into a group of Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs where they will meet two teams from the Glad Africa Championship that are yet to be confirmed. On the final day of the league, the Chilli Boys needed a win and a Stellenbosch FC loss to Golden Arrows in order to escape the Play-Offs but they drew with Supersport United, and Stellies also played to a draw with Abafana Bes’thende.

AmaZulu qualify for Caf Champions League for the first time in history

Benni McCarthy took the reigns as head coach of AmaZulu at the beginning of the season and was given a mandate to finish within the top four. He actually went almost beyond the mandate as Usuthu were one of the strongest contenders for the league title.

Kaizer Chiefs secure MTN spot in the last game

It was one of those sour seasons for Kaizer Chiefs as at some point they were found in the bottom six in the league standings. Just after they sacked Gavin Hunt, Amakhosi won their last two league games under interim coach Arthur Zwane. Despite finishing within top the 8, the Glamour Boys recorded their lowest point tally of 36 points in club history. They will face Sundowns in the MTN 8 quarterfinals next season.
