Kaizer Chiefs haven’t tasted victory in the last six league games and desperately need maximum points in this weekend.
Amakhosi coach Gavin Hunt is under pressure with a lot of criticism against him after a string of poor results and awful performances. Hunt is desperate for points in order to climb the league table and winning against Orlando Pirates would be a major confidence boost for them.
Pirates are in a rich vein of form as they’ve won three of their last four league games. They play offensive football, create lots of chances and have ruthless forwards in Deon Hotto and Tshegofatso Mabasa. They don’t give the ball away easily and always look dangerous.
Other Bucs players that might cause a problem for Chiefs are midfielder Linda Mntambo who plays both defensively and offensively. A skillful Mntambo can create the space for himself as he’s a big man and hard to deal with. Siphesihle Ndlovu who has been introduced into a new position at right back has gotten used to it, he knows when to overlap and can be a threat with his crosses.
This will be the fourth Soweto Derby this season after Pirates won the last three. The teams met in the MTN 8 Semi-finals played over the two legs where Pirates won the first one 3-0 and the second one 2-0. The Sea Robbers came out victorious again 2-1 in a league match early this year.
The confidence of Chiefs’ players is on the floor but a Soweto derby can automatically refill players with mental strength as the teams are big rivals and there is a lot of pride at stake. We have seen it before when a team that had been struggling surprisingly won the derby. Can Chiefs do that this time?
Bucs come to this match sitting in 3rd position with 35 points while Chiefs are 11th with 20 points and have two games in hand.
If I was betting, I would go with Orlando Pirates as they’re in form and better than Chiefs in numbers.
The match will be played on Sunday with Kick off at 15:00 at FNB Stadium.
