DSTV PREMIERSHIP BIG MATCH PREVIEW: SUPERSPORT UNITED VS MAMELODI SUNDOWNS

Mamelodi Sundowns have won their last four games in all competitions. They seem like a team that wants to sweep everything in their way. Are SuperSport United strong enough to end Masandawana’s winning run?

Sundowns have dominated their previous 10 Tshwane derbies as they have eight wins, one draw and one loss. Nowadays this clash is not too hard to predict, as most statistics are in favour of Downs. However derbies come with playing for pride and bragging rights, so it’s going be fascinating to watch this battle.

Last season’s champions are on top of the DSTV Premiership table with 24 points while SuperSport United are in 2nd position with 22 points. Kaitano Tembo’s men seem like they could be one of the strongest title contenders.

Masandawana have shown continuity of what they were doing last season and in fact, over the past six seasons leading to the question “what’s working for them?”. It is simply the depth in their squad, because if a crucial player gets injured or suspended, another quality one will come and do the job. All positions always have more than two quality players in their team. This leads to a healthy competition in the squad and they can always pick a perfectly balanced line up.

Matsatsansa’s striker Bradley Grobler is in brilliant form and and currently the league’s leading goalscorer with 10 goals after 10 games. Sundowns will have to watch out for crosses into the box as he scores a lot with his head. His header can be like a shot, and it’s not easy for the goalkeeper to deal with it. The best way to tackle this, is to shut down crosses and long balls. He also recently became SuperSport United’s all time leading goal scorer with the goal he scored in the midweek.

Gaston Sirino is back in Sundowns colours after negotiations of a possible move to Al Ahly fell through. His combination with Themba Zwane was remarkable in their previous game and it resulted in the second goal being scored.

Bafana Bastyle also have in-form Peter Shalulile who has scored four goals in 10 league games. Despite only scoring four goals this season, he is a key link man between midfield and attack and has a high work rate. He also combines well with Kermit Erasmus with both players adding pace to the attack.

It is clear that SuperSport United are on form but I would put my money on Mamelodi Sundowns.

The match will be played on Saturday at Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium with Kick Off at 15:00.
