Daniel Levy is an astute chairman but he has got this one wrong. Badly wrong! Just 12 games into the season following an unprecedented Champions League run, Levy has bowed to media pressure and put the bullet into one of the best managers in the world, Mauricio Pochettino.
To make matters worse his replacement appears to be one of Jose Mourinho, Jose Mourinho or Jose Mourinho. The Special One has already started dusting off framed pictures of himself to be strategically placed all over Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. If the mood was already low around the club, expect it to get worse as the latter day version of Mourinho is nothing but sour. Just ask the Chelsea and Man United players.
The usual “he lost the dressing room” line was paraded out as the reason for firing Poch. Apparently player power did him in. Players complained of frustration at the way the manager over-analysed everything they did. Shame! Wait until Jose comes in with his autocratic style of management. These spoilt Spurs players will not know what hit them.
The truth is that Pochettino is one of the best managers that Spurs have ever had … and they won’t find better. This is a point not lost on former Spurs legend and talented pundit Gary Lineker who tweeted: ‘Mauricio Pochettino has been sacked by @SpursOfficial. He helped the club to punch massively above their weight for years. Good luck with finding a better replacement….ain’t gonna happen.”
A sign of a great manager is when he improves players. When Poch took over, no one had heard of the likes of Harry Kane, Dele Ali and Harry Winks. Poch turned them into stars – shunning the cheque book and creating a team that came within in a whisker of becoming the champions of Europe. He was outspent by all the top teams around him – notoriously tight fisted Levy keeping his wallet out of reach in order to pay for the new stadium. Yet Spurs were consistently in the top four and played with style.
How was he repaid? Fired after just 12 games into the season!?? League form hasn’t been great but they still had time to mount a challenge for the top 4 with a decent run over the Christmas season. Furthermore, Spurs look good to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League.
The irony of this all is that Pochettino is top of the list for all the biggest clubs in the world. Bayern Munich will most likely snap him up or if he chooses to have some patience, he could wait and see if the Real Madrid position becomes available … perhaps even Barcelona. In another twist of fate, he could ultimately be swapping places with Jose and taking over at Manchester United. If I were Ed Woodward, I would be offering Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer whatever exit package he wanted to get Poch in. Pochettino is EXACTLY what Man United need right now!
As for Spurs – I predict more gloom under Jose FC, Jose United, Jose Milan whatever he decides to call himself – after all, it’s always about him. How many titles HE has won – not the team … HIM. Levy will have to get the cheque book out – Jose won’t be able to operate on a shoe-string budget – at Man United he struggled even with a big budget. He wasn’t able to improve any of the players. Manchester United became one of the most boring teams in the Premier League.
Park the bus! This may go down as one of the biggest mistakes in Spurs history!
